WHO WE ARE

Hyde-Addison Elementary School provides education from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Click on the Open House tab if you are interested in engagement opportunities or building tours.

While part of the larger DC Public Schools system, we are a tightly-knit, diverse community with its own unique culture. We are committed to educating the “whole child,” supporting each and every student academically, emotionally and socially. When you walk into our school, you will feel welcomed, supported, and challenged to be your best self. Our leaders, teachers, staff, and families are all deeply invested in making this a place where students are happy to come every day, where they will grow, and where they will be prepared for higher education and their careers.

Based on parent feedback, this FAQ was compiled to support incoming Hyde-Addison families with helpful information. For answers to specific questions, please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov.

Q | Do you offer individual building tours to families?

A | We are not able to accommodate building tours to prospective families, due to the volume of inquiries received. Instead, we invite families to join our in-person open houses where the building is toured. If you aren’t able to attend, we also create a building tour video every year that you can view right here on our website (above).


Q | What curriculum is taught at Hyde-Addison?

A | Early Childhood Education (ECE) classrooms use Creative Curriculum and Building Blocks, which are play-based in their approach. Grades K-5 use a science-of-reading backed approach to English Language Arts (ELA), Writer’s Workshop, and Eureka Math. Science is taught through STEMscopes and Social Studies standards align to the social justice standards from Learning for Justice.

 Q | What if there are areas where my child is advanced, or behind grade level?

A |Our instructional team administers a series of benchmark assessments at regular intervals to determine where student learning needs are and create individualized plans for support both within the classroom setting and in small group settings. We are fortunate that our teachers’ expertise and curricula empower us to curate scaffolded learning experiences that are differentiated so that every student has a rewarding school experience.

Q | Is there foreign language instruction at Hyde-Addison? What are the Specials classes?

A | At this time, no foreign languages are taught during the school day however there are often options to learn foreign language through enrichment programming after school hours. Inner Core classes include music and performing arts, art, library, and PE.

 

Q | How does the school communicate with families?

A | Hyde-Addison values families as our academic partners and works to communicate clearly and consistently. A schoolwide newsletter is sent by email every Friday afternoon. The newsletter platform allows for automatic translation in over 50 languages to support families from diverse language backgrounds. Teachers communicate with families through newsletters and on the app Remind on a regular basis, during 3 formal Parent Teacher Conferences, and by appointment as needed.

 

Q | How do families get to know one another?

A | Our community is extremely welcoming and supportive of one another. Families often spend time with one another informally at school sponsored events or at pick-up and drop-off. Formal ways to meet other families might include activities organized by the class Room Parent, a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) event, or attending a Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) meeting.

 

Q | How does the school approach behavior management and student discipline?

A | Hyde-Addison believes that the best behavior management is strong instruction partnered with social and emotional supports. We utilize the Responsive Classroom approach, supplemented by Second Step, to support positive student behaviors proactively and Restorative Practices to learn from and repair harm that results from misbehavior.

 

Q | How many teachers will my child have?

A | PreK – Kindergarteners are taught by one classroom teacher and an aide. Students in 1st -2 nd grades are taught by a classroom teacher. Grades 3-5 may be departmentalized, meaning children have two teachers: an ELA teacher and a math/science teacher. Eligible students are also taught by our Student Support Team and receive special education or English Language services. K-5 class sizes are typically in the low 20’s. The PreK3 cap is 16 and PreK4 cap is 20 students.

Q | How many classes are there per grade? How many children are enrolled?

A | There is 1 PreK3 class, 2 PreK 4 classes, 3 kindergarten classes, 3 first grade classes, 3 second grade classes, 3 third grade classes, 3 fourth grade classes, and 2 fifth grade classes. This year, our enrollment number is approximately 390 students.

 

Q | Who should I go to if I have questions?

A | We know there are plenty of questions that arise for families when they join a new school community and we want to support you in getting accurate information in a timely manner.
